Abstract

Mental health is a multidimensional concept that is not only interpreted as the absence of mental disorders, but also includes psychological, social, and spiritual well-being that allows individuals to function optimally. This article is a literature review that comprehensively discusses the concept of normality and various mental health models based on classical and contemporary theories. Based on the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Mental Health Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 18 of 2014, mental health is a condition of individual well-being who is able to realize his potential, overcome life pressures, work productively, and contribute to society. Various conceptual models are put forward in understanding mental health, including: (1) mental health as a state above normal, (2) mental health as maturity, (3) mental health as positive or spiritual emotions, (4) mental health as emotional and social intelligence, (5) mental health as subjective well-being, and (6) mental health as resilience. The six models highlight mental health as a dynamic process influenced by biological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual factors. This article emphasizes the importance of cross-cultural understanding and positive approaches to mental health to strengthen promotive and preventive interventions in the field of psychiatry.
